The CBI had charged Amit Shah and 37 others, including several police officers, in the two cases of alleged fake encounters in which gangster Sohrabuddin, and his wife Kauser Bi, were reportedly abducted by Gujarat’s anti-terrorism squad and killed near Gandhinagar in November 2005. Tulsi Ram Prajapati, an eyewitness to the encounter, was also killed by police at Chapri village in Banaskantha district of Gujarat in December 2006.
It was later established that they were killed in fake encounters. Amit Shah was made an accused in this case, as he was found calling the senior IPS officers involved in the crime during the encounter period. However, Amit Shah’s counsel proved in the court Amit Shah called up many other police officers as the Home Minister and that can’t prove his involvement in any crime they may have committed.
The Special CBI Court accepted the arguments and cited lack of strong evidence while dropping the charges against Amit Shah. Meanwhile, Sohrabuddin’s family members decided to move the High Court against the verdict.
