Opposition Parties disrupt Lok Sabha over Lalit Modi, Vyapam

Opposition parties led by the Congress created a ruckus in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday over the Lalit Modi issue, forcing repeated adjournments of the house.

As soon as the house assembled for the day, the opposition shouted slogans against the NDA government on the Lalit Modi issue and the Vyapam recruitment scam in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Madhya Pradesh.

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and Veerappa Moily had moved an adjournment motion in the house on the iisue of former Indian Premier League (IPL) chief Lalit Modi, which Speaker Sumitra Mahajan rejected.

Leaders of almost all opposition parties, including the Congress and the Left, trooped to the speaker’s podium wearing black bands and carrying placards.

As the speaker tried to conduct the question hour, the members shouted slogans forcing her to adjourn the house till noon.

When the house reassembled at noon, the speaker warned members against carrying placards of disciplinary action against them.

“I would request the members carrying placards to refrain from doing so. I would initiate appropriate disciplinary action against the members if they don’t,” she said.

As the opposition continued to shout slogans and display placards, she adjourned the house till 2 p.m.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had earlier said a senior Congress leader had pressed her to give diplomatic passport to a scam accused Congress leader. (IANS)
