IMS-Bhubaneswar organises Seminar on Sustainable Development

Bhubaneswar, Nov 6: A seminar on ‘Volunteerism for Sustainable Development’ was organised by Institute of Media Studies (IMS) at its conference hall here on Thursday.  Addressing the students of the institution, Advocacy and Communication Specialist of UNICEF Alka Gupta said sustainable social change can only be brought through active volunteerism of people at each level. Rights of people and their duties are co-related each other. At a time when members of each community demand their rights and entitlements, they should also come forward to perform their
duties and obligations along with take responsibility, she added. Gupta also said collective and corrective actions for sustainable development can be ensured at the community level through youth Volunteerism.

Speaking on the occasion, Programme Manager of Action Aid-India, Bhubaneswar Ghasiram Panda said the basic human rights were governed by the Constitution and intervention of international protocol. In order to ensure these rights to the people, volunteerism plays a significant role. He stressed on the need of balanced development so as to add rationality in terms of sustainability. Volunteerism bridges the gap between policy and action and creates the trust building between them.

Sujit Mohapatra of Bakul Foundation highlighted that volunteerism as the need of the hour to develop community spirit. He gave preference to group initiative which would an initiative through individual action. “By communicating and raising the spirit of volunteerism among the community, we can empower the society which would be more concerned about optimum utilization of resources. The spread of volunteer epidemic is the key to sustainable development,” he stressed.

Among others, M&E Officer of Youth Affairs Department Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra, Director of IMS Prof Upendra Padhi and course coordinator MSW department of the institution Dr. Gayatri Patnaik also spoke. Students and faculties of the institution were present.
