KIMS-Bhubaneswar celebrates World Organ Donation Day

Bhubaneswar, Nov 30: World Organ Donation and Organ Transplantation Day was celebrated at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and Pradyumna Bal Memorial Hospital. On this occasion an awareness rally on organ donation was held.

More than five hundred students of KIMS and KISS participated in the rally. Prof. Dr. S. C. Dash, Director, KIMS; Dr. Panchanan Sahoo, Head, Cardiology Department of KIMS and Panchanan Parida, MR, KIMS also joined the rally. A Continuous Medical Education (CME) was also held in KIMS. Inaugurating the CME Niranjan Pujari, Speaker, Odisha Legislative Assembly said, in eighties transplantation of human and animal organs was initiated, but it was not success.

But in 20th century medical scientists got success in organ transplantation like Heart, Kidney and liver. On the other hand there are legal hurdles in organ donation. Most of the people are unaware of organ donation. So awareness should be created among people to donate organ.

In this regard doctors and medical students have a vital role to play, he added. Briefing about the programme Dr. S. C. Dash said, organ transplantation is most spectacular achievement in the medical sciences. Today we are successful in heart, liver and kidney transplantation. By which an affected person can live from 10 to 30 years.

Every year 5 lakh people die in road accidents. People should come out to donate organ of such kind of organ of people who have no possibility of life after accident. One can donate body of a dead person those bodies are suitable for medical research. Among others Saswati Bal, President, KIIT & KISS; Prof. P. P. Mathur, VC, KIIT University also spoke on the occasion.

Dr. B. C. Das, Director (Medicine) KIMS gave welcome address while, Dr. S. B. Ogale, Principal proposed vote of thanks. Prof. Dipankar Bhoumik, Nephrology, AIIMS, New Delhi; Prof. Sandeep Agrawal, Transplant Surgery, AIIMS, New Delhi; Dr. B. B. Mishra and Dr. S. C. Panigrahi of KIMS spoke on the Kidney transplant, transplant surgery, Heart transplant and liver transplant.
