OHRC celebrates World Human Rights day

The World Human Rights Day on 10^th of December was commemorated by the Odisha Human Rights Commission by organizing a meeting in Bhubaneswar  in which distinguished judges from Odisha  as well as  New Delhi took part. Hon’ble Governor of Odisha ,S.C.Jamir, was the Chief Guest.  Also present were the acting Chairperson of OHRC, Justice B.K .Mishra and OHRC member Justice AK Patnaik. Luminaries in different fields of activity as also emerging Law Graduates were in attendance.

The Governor took up the case of human rights violation on the weaker sex. Calling the situation today as a ‘gloomy picture of rampant violation of Human Rights’, he highlighted the unfortunate plight of women who are subjected to various kinds of atrocities, harassment and torture. He also raised the plight of Adivasis and tribals as in the rampant exploitation that they are subjected to. He said that illiteracy and innocence of the downtrodden people is one of the main reasons why they face exploitation.  “It is unfair to seek one’s own interest at the cost of others.

The world, at large, must understand that one may appear to be different from the other but actually we are one and bound as the human race’’, said Jamir. He quoted Mahatma Gandhi a number of times and asked everybody to remember Bapu’s call for a world free of discrimination. The Governor also praised the efforts of Nobel laureates like Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi and Malala Yousafzai in the protection of Human Rights.

People who have done pioneering work in the field of Human Rights in the state of Odisha were felicitated on the occasion.The souvenir of the OHRC’S celebration of the World Human Rights day was also released on the occasion.

December 10^th is celebrated as the World Human Rights day following the UN General Assembly declaration and adoption of the UN Declaration of Human Rights on this date in 1948. This year thus happens to be the 66^th anniversary of the date.
