*** Lalit Modi was the pioneer of Indian Premier League (IPL). He was instrumental in bringing hundreds of crores of business to BCCI through IPL. In 2009, the intelligence bureau confirmed that Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel were planning to assassinate Lalit Modi and his family.
*** In 2010, Lalit Modi escaped to London after N Srinivasan targeted him suspended him as chairman and Commissioner of the IPL in April 2010. He was accused of impropriety. On Sept 6, 2013, BCCI’s three-member committee consisting of Jyotiraditya Scindia and Arun Jaitley accused Modi of several charges of irregularities. On September 25, BCCI imposed a life ban on him.
*** In February 2014, the Bombay High Court had shot down the ED case against Lalit Modi, saying they did not provide strong evidences to back their claims. The court also said that there was no proof to suggest that Lalit Modi was involved in capacity as an individual for breaking foreign exchange laws. The Delhi HC restores Lalit Modi’s passport in August 2014.
*** Lalit Modi is facing FEMA cases related to IPL and his presence is required before the Enforcement Directorate.
*** On May 6, 2014, Lalit Modi was again elected as the President of Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) despite being in London. But, he was impeached on March 9, 2015 through a no-confidence motion in which 17 out of 18 members cast their vote against him. There was some controversy regarding the motion as only 18 out of 33 members were present.
*** Although he was facing many charges and allegations, Lalit Modi remained a favourite of top news channels of India during the Srinivasan controversy. They welcomed Lalit Modi as a respected panelist and kept seeking his expert opinion against Srinivasan and BCCI and in many cricket matters.
