57% Voter Turnout recorded in Bihar during 1st Phase Polling

At least 57% voters exercised their franchise during the first phase polling in Bihar, which was held today. The percentage is much higher than the 2010 figure of 50.8%. In total, 49 Assembly seats in 10 districts went to the polls today. 59.5% male and 54.5% female voters cast their votes.

People in Samastipur, Begusarai, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Banka, Munger, Lakhisarai, Sheikhpura, Nawada and Jamui districts voted in the first phase. The EVMs sealed the fate of 586 candidates who are in the fray.

Barring a few incidents, the polling was by-and-large peaceful. Unidentified men shot at LJP candidate Vijay Kumar Singh in Jamui constituency, but he escaped unhurt. Police arrested one of the criminals involved in the attack.

Most of the constituencies that went to polls today, are considered as JD(U) strongholds. However, situation may change this time. People boycotted polling at 9 places.
