11 killed; Odisha Sailor among 6 missing in Gas Ship explosion off Russia coast

ONI Bureau:  At least 11 people were killed after two ships carrying crew members from India, Turkey and Libya caught fire in the Kerch Strait off Russia coast on Jan 21.

The fire broke out as the two vessels were transferring fuel from one to the other.

Some three dozen sailors managed to escape the burning ships by jumping off the ships.

While 12 persons have been rescued from the sea, 9 sailors are still missing out of which 6 are Indian sailors.

The 6 missing Indian sailors include, Siddharth Meher, Neeraj Singh, Rushikesh Raju Sakpal, Akshay Baban Jadhav, Sebastian Britto Breezlin Sahayaraj and Anandasekar Avinash.

Siddharth Meher (24), a resident of Sambalpur, Odisha is among the 6 missing Indian sailors, was reportedly working as a trainee in one of the ill-fated ships.  He is the only son of Satya Narayan Meher, the Regional Manager of PPL in Sambalpur.
