The Odisha Police, on Monday, confirmed the arrest of Bibekananda Biswal alias Biban, in the high-profile Anjana Mishra gang-rape case. The case dates back to January 1999.
Biban was arrested from Mumbai. Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi confirmed the arrest.
On the intervening night of January 9 and 10, 1999, Anjana Mishra, estranged wife of Indian Forest Officer was out with a journalist friend when her vehicle was intercepted and she was gang-raped.
While two of the accused were arrested, the prime accused Biban had managed to flee.
The high-profile case had led to a political furore in the state, with Mishra alleging that the then Chief Minister JB Patnaik and his friend former advocate General Indrajit Ray had a role in the case.
JB Patnaik had to give up the post as the Chief Minister and was replaced by Giridhar Gamang.
