BJD will try to pass Odisha Police Bill-2015 in Monsoon Session

Bhubaneswar, Aug 17: The ruling party, BJD will try to pass the Odisha Police Bill-2015 in the monsoon session of Odisha Assembly beginning Tuesday. The bill was already tabled in the assembly during the budget session but discussion was not held.

BJD has decided to circulate the bill in Oida language among MLAs to get the support of the opposition leaders. Opposition parties have been opposing the bill as  the ruling party  did not include the leader of opposition in the State Police Security Commission.

The Chief Minister of Odisha will head the commission, which will guide the state government in discharging it’s duty over various topics as provisioned in the bill. Congress leaders opposed the bill and alleged the state government of violating Supreme Court’s directives.

The Odisha Police Bill-2015 seeks merge the provisions the Police Act, 1861 and Odisha State Armed Police Act, 1946 in a single legislation. According to the bill, tabled in the assembly, state would be divided into various police ranges and each range will be further divided into police districts. And, these police districts will be different from revenue districts. Each police districts would be further divided into police sub-divisions with specific number of police stations under it.
