Communal Flare Up in Odisha’s Balasore and Jashipur

One of the most peaceful state – Odisha, may brace for communal tensions if we take into account two separate incidents occurred on Saturday and Sunday in Balasore and Jashipur. Unless the Odisha Government treat these matters with urgency and resolve all issues with timely intervention, things may go beyond control.

The first incident occurred at Patrapada area of Balasore Town when the remains of a dead cow were found floating in a pond whose water is being used to worship Lord Shiva. The remains included cow fat, skin and bones. The villages held demonstration in protest and blocked the road. The police had a tough time to calm them down. A fire brigade was called to drain the pond and the administration agreed for the purification of the temple and pond.

The second incident occurred Jashipur in Mayurbhanj district. Some miscreants allegedly from other community, showed disregard to Lord Hanuman’s flags, uprooted them and even dumped them into an urinal, triggering massive outrage and violence in the area.

The ‘Banar Sena’ activists went on a rampage and damaged the office, waiting room, ticket counter and some shops inside the Jashipur Private Bus Stand where the incident occurred. Heavy police deployment has been made in the area to restore normalcy and prevent any communal flare up. Situation remains tense in Jashipur.
