Historic Dhanu Yatra kicks off in Bargarh

Dhanu Yatra, the world’s largest open air theatre, which is of historical significance for the people of Western Odisha, kicked off with much fanfare in Bargarh yesterday. The 11-day-long gala festival will end on 5th January 2015. A large stage with 125 feet width and 60 feet length will be the centre of attraction of Dhanu Yatra.

During the inauguration ceremony, Bargarh Lok Sabha MP Dr Prabhas Singh, MLA Debesh Acharya, District Collector Anjan Kumar Manik, ADM P Kumar Gadatia, Dhanuyatra Committee Convener Sureswar Satpathy, Textiles and Handloom Minister Snehangini Chhuria, Municipality Chairman Prasanta Kumar Behera, DIPRO Kalayani Das,  DRDA PD Rajendra Prasad Mund were present.

On the Day 1 of the Dhanu Yatra festival, King Kansa dethroned his father Ugrasen and took over as the new monarch. His rule began with a bang and he will continue to rule the roost in Dhanu Yatra till January 5 when he will be ‘killed’ by Lord Krishna. Hrushikesh Bhoi continues to impress with her performance as Kansa. The Odisha Tourism department made all efforts to popularise the festival on a global arena this time.

Several people thronged to Dhanu Yatra to witness the inauguration of the festival, which made a colourful start yesterday. The festival will witness a huge congregation of people across the state and from outside in the next few days.
