Minor ‘Divyang’ Rape cases rise in Odisha

The safety and security of minor divyang (differently-abled) girls in Odisha have become a major concern as the incidents of rape involving victims under the age of 18 are increasing in last few weeks.

Ironically, the incidents have occurred at a time when the Naveen Government has launched ‘Paree Pain Katha Tiye’ campaign with a view to spread awareness on rising incidents of sexual assaults against minor girls and women in the State

A minor divyang girl was allegedly raped by a middle-aged man at Purushotampur slum in Mancheswar area of Bhubaneswar yesterday.

The accused, Arun Nayak, has been arrested after family members of the victim filed an FIR against him at Mancheswar Police Station in this connection. He was forwarded to the court today.

Police said, Nayak had committed the crime on Sunday when the girl was alone at her home.

on June 5, a mentally challenged minor girl was allegedly raped by her own uncle at Krushnachandrapur village in Nayagarh. Soon after the horrific incident, her mother lodged a police complaint at Chandapur police station in this connection. However the accused is at large.

In yet another shameful incident, a 17-year-old differently-abled minor girl was impregnated by an NGO worker in Sahajpada village under Bijepur police limits of Kalahandi district.

Sources said, one Rahit Dash, who works in one of the NGOs in the area, had been keeping physical relationship with the girl in a pretext to marry her. Eventually she became pregnant.

Dash forced the minor girl, who was four-month pregnant, to abort but in vain.

The girl, however, showed courage and informed her family members about the incident, and later filed an FIR against Dash at Bijepur Police Station. The accused was arrested and sent to the court.
