The Prime Minister pointed out that every successive government, for the last few decades, had been working to remove poverty but couldn’t succeed as expected. The intention of the previous governments might be ethically clean to eradicate poverty, but somewhere or other, the strategies were filled with some lacuna to implement various poverty-eradication schemes in true letter and spirit. That’s why the rate of poverty and unemployment has increased in the states like Odisha, he said.
Narendra Modi asked the people as well as the government of Odisha why the state remains an economically poorest state in the country despite the state is endowed with abundant mineral resources such as coal, iron ore, bauxite etc. and long coastal line along the Bay of Bengal.
“Poverty in the eastern part of the country is increasing. People from this region go to western states in search of employments. Why? You have every resource to be self-sufficient. The almighty has given you everything,” he said.
The Prime Minister says his government has been striving hard to eliminate the disease of poverty from the country. He named various plan and programmes initiated by his government for the all-round development of the country. He categorically said the aim and objectives of Janani Suraksha Yojana, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Indradhanush Yojana, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, MUDRA Yojana among others.
More importantly, Modi promised to defeat poverty in India over the next 1000 days.
The Prime Minister concluded his speech by saying, “I came here to give the account of the union government but your state government has not come in 17 years for such purpose.”
Meanwhile, the state BJP leaders have recently named this meeting as ‘Vikas Utsav’ since the party will try to convey the message to the people of the state regarding the success of various programmes initiated by Modi government.
Union P&NG Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Tribal Minister Jual Oram, Ex-Chief Minister Giridhar Gamamg, BJP state unit President Basant Panda, local BJP leader Pratap Sarangi, KV Singh Deo and other senior BJP leaders of Odisha were present in the occasion.
