Naveen launches ‘Niramaya’ Free Medicine Scheme on May 1

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has launched ‘Niramaya’ free distribution medicines scheme at the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar today. The ‘free medicine scheme’ will be expanded to all government hospitals in the state soon.

Initially, 150 types of medicines will be covered under the scheme. Later, it will be expanded to 570. The state government has allocated around Rs 200 Crore for provision of free medicines through the OSMC (Odisha State Medical Corporation).

The Odisha Government has decided to supply specialized medicines for cancer, hemophilia, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, psychiatric medicines and other diseases before the end of this year.

Healthcare experts have questioned the effectiveness of the scheme, saying it will create more pressure on the suppliers and also raise the hopes among the people. They will be confused about what are free and what are not. The doctors will have a tough time to convince the patients and their family members. The entire scenario may delay the treatment process and result in disaster.
