The ‘Model School’ concept was a pet project of the UPA II government. Even states received initial funds for the project. However, Modi Government refused to fund for this, forcing the state government to take over the scheme and project it as its own.

The Odisha government is planning to open such schools in every block of the state to help the rural students get better education and facilities. The course will be on CBSE pattern. According to the government sources, 88,138 students had applied to take admission in 100 Adarsha Vidyalayas out of which 24,000 got the final nod. Uniform and books to be provided free to the students.
The Adarsha Vidyalayas will have hostel facilities. The CBSE curriculum will have English as the first language and Odia as the second language. The schools will have teacher-student ratio of 1:25 and classroom-student ratio of 1:40. They will offer education from Standard VI to Standard XII.
Each class will have 80 students, with 40 students in each section. 50% of the total seats will be reserved for SC/ST/Girls. The Adarsha Vidyalaya project will be managed by the Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya Sangathan.
