Taking a suo motu action, the Commission issued notices to Malkangiri District Collector and the State Health Secretary and asked them to submit a detailed report within four weeks. It urged the administration to be sensitive towards maintaining cleanliness in the area, and create awareness among villagers over the tradition of rearing pigs.
NHRC advised the state government that vaccination of the children to protect them from the disease from the next year will be too late.
Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Health Secretary Arati Ahuja and Animal Husbandry Secretary Bishnupada Sethi, who visited Malkangiri Monday, said a committee would be formed at the district level to check the disease.
Arti Ahuja said, the department is taking all possible steps to protect the children from the disease.
The Japanese Encephalitis disease is a Vector-borne disease, which develops in the pigs and is transmitted by mosquitoes to humans.
