No need for another backwater study, Centre to SC over Polavaram Project

ONI Bureau:  Centre told the Supreme Court today that there is no need for conducting another study on backwater of the Polavaram project.

The Apex Court on Thursday asked the Centre whether it has conducted any backwater study on discharging 50 lakh cusecs of water into the Polavaram Dam project. The court listed the matter for hearing today.

Earlier, the counsel appearing for Odisha, Gopal Subramaniam, submitted a report to the court, mentioning that work of Polavaram should be suspended as the project didn’t have valid environmental clearance (EC). Reportedly, EC was given for a discharge capacity of 36 lakh cusecs, but the Andhra Pradesh government raised it to 50 lakh cusecs from 36 cusecs.

According to the petition filed by Odisha govt, the Polavaram project works were taken up in violation of the Bachawat Tribunal order.
