OAT Abolition: Lawyers to revive agitation in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Dec 9: State Administrative Tribunal (SAT) bar association lawyers have decided to revive their stir against Odisha government over the abolition of Tribunal. It was decided at a meeting convened by the general body of the association on Tuesday in Cuttack.

They have decided to intense their stir which they called off on September 29 after getting assurance from Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. They had also served November end as ultimatum to the state government to take a decision over its cabinet’s decision to disband the Tribunal.

Notably, Odisha cabinet had approved a proposal to abolish all the benches Odisha Administrative Tribunal (OAT), also known as SAT. The Tribunal was formed in July, 1986 to redress grievances of government employees. Only eight states including Odisha had Tribunal benches to redress government employee’s grievances.

They said the state government did not respond over given ultimatum to recall its decision to abolish Tribunal. A decision over the strike is likely to be taken in the meeting of executive committee of the association to be held on December 10, they added.

Lawyers of Orissa High Court Bar Association and across the state had extended their support to the strike called by SAT lawyers in September. The association members have urged all lawyers to join the stir against Odisha government over the Tribunal abolition decision.
