Pandemonium in Odisha Assembly over Power Tariff Hike

The Odisha Assembly witnessed noisy scenes and huge uproar over the power tariff hike for 2015-16. Opposition Congress and BJP MLAs stormed into the well of the house and stalled the proceedings. The Assembly Speaker adjourned the House till 12:30 PM.

The Congress and BJP MLAs held placards inside the assembly and shouted slogans against CM Naveen Patnaik and his government. The government has gone on defensive on this issue. It attributed the decision to rise in Coal prices and directives of CERC.

Earlier yesterday, the Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) hiked the power tariff by 20 paise per unit for all domestic consumers. In Agriculture sector, the power tariff was hike is 40 paise per unit. Congress, BJP and Left parties have threatened to launch a massive agitation against the government over this issue.
