SC rejects Odisha Govt’s plea on Reservation limits in Civic Polls

ONI Bureau:  The Supreme Court today rejected Odisha Government’s plea challenging the Orissa High Court’s order on reservation of seats in different Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the State.

Earlier, the Orissa High Court directed the State Government that reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and other backward classes (OBC) not to exceed 50% in urban local bodies.

However, the State Government moved the Apex Court against High Court’s order on quota in local bodies.

It is to be noted that Supreme Court of India ruled in 1992 that reservations could not exceed 50 per cent, anything above which it judged would violate the norms of the Constitution.
