Seven including Just Married Couple killed in Road Accident

Seven people, including a newly married couple, were killed and two injured in a road accident in Sundargarh district on Tuesday, police said. The accident occurred near Lathikata on National Highway-143 in Rourkela when a dumper truck, coming from the opposite direction, collided head-on with the car of the bridegroom and his family, returning from Berhampur, police said.

While three people, including the bride died on the spot, four people succumbed to their injuries in a hospital, police said. Police said the bridegroom’s family from Fertiliser Township area of Rourkela went to Berhampur for the marriage. After the marriage, the bride and the groom among seven others were on their way to Rourkela in a car when the accident happened.

According to sources, the couple and seven others were returning to the groom’s house at Fertilizer Area of the city after solemnising their marriage at the bride’s home in Srirampur Bazar of Berhampur when the dumper going from Rourkela collided with their car head on. Perhaps if everything could have gone rightly then hardly in next 10 minutes they would have reached the groom’s house.

While two persons died on the spot, five others, including a minor girl, succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment in IGH here. The victims were first rushed the Rourkela Government Hospital here and later shifted to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) when their condition deteriorated, sources added. The deceased were identified as Sushanta Ratha(groom,27), Sunita Panda( bride, 25), bride’s elder sister Laxmipriya Panda, younger sister Sujata Panda, groom’s niece Chandrama Rath (4), Susanta Giri (driver) and Ramanada Mishra (Cameraman). On the other hand the elder of bride Santosh Rath and his wife Suchita who were also riding in the car are in critical condition at IGH. According to doctor Santosh’s condition is very serious as he has multiple injuries. Thanks god bride’s younger brother Sukant Rath who was suppose to ride in the same car and in last moment he shifted to bus.

Following information, police and a fire brigade team rushed to the spot and brought out the body of the bride by cutting the door of the car in a gas cutter. Meanwhile, police sending the bodies for post mortem began investigation into the incident and on job to trace out the dumper driver who fled away from the spot said DSP T.K.Jena.

The two seriously injured people were rushed to the Rourkela Government Hospital. They were later shifted to Ispat General Hospital where their condition is stated to be critical. Sundargarh DSP Tusarkant Jena said the injured have been admitted to an Intensive Care Unit after their condition deteriorated. ( With inputs from IANS)
