Speaker fails to bring Truce in Odisha Assembly

Despite the intervention of Assembly Speaker Niranjan Pujari, the Opposition parties continue to stall the proceedings of the House over power tariff hike. The House was adjourned till 12:50 amidst chaotic scenes.

Earlier, the Speaker had called an all-party meeting to end the logjam in the House. According to Leader of Opposition, Narasingha Mishra, the meeting failed to yield any results, as all parties stuck to their stand. “There will be another meeting soon. We won’t cooperate with the government unless a firm decision is taken in this regard,” he added.

While Congress and BJP MLAs protested against the power tariff hike, the BJD MLAs shouted slogans against MCL, RSP and NALCO for saying NO to state government’s Rs 5 ‘Aahar’ scheme to be kicked off from April 1, 2015.

The Odisha Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) had earlier announced a hike of 20 paise per unit for all types of domestic consumers. In case of Agriculture, the hike was 40 paise per unit. The Congress and BJP have been protesting against the hike across the state.
