Sakshi Malik creates History, wins Bronze Medal in Wrestling at Rio 2016

Sakshi Malik became part of India’s Sports History, as she became the first Indian Woman Wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics. Sakshi ended a 0-5 deficit to bounce back strongly and pulling off a sensational 8-5 win over Aisuluu Tynybekova in the Play-off bout to win a Bronze medal.

This is the first medal for India at Rio 2016 and it came from unexpected quartet. Sakshi won two matches from behind, but lost in the quarterfinals. She won the repechage later to qualify for the Bronze medal.

Sakshi pinned down the Kyrgyzstan wrestler in the dying moments of the match. She won it in the last 30 seconds. Earlier, Vinesh Phogat suffered a shock exit from the quarterfinals after injuring her leg. She was moved away in a stretcher.

The 23-year-old Sakshi became the fourth woman sportsperson from a India to win a medal at the Olympics. Earlier, Weightlifter Karnam Malleshwari (2000, Sydney), Boxer MC Mary Kom (2012, London) and Badminton Player Saina Nehwal (2012, London) were the only other women players from India to have won a medal in Olympics.
