Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu opened the medal tally for India after she won a silver medal in the 49kg weightlifting category in Tokyo Olympics. This is the first time that India has won a medal on the opening day.
In shooting, Saurabh Chaudhary finished 7th in the 10m air pistol final, and lost on a medal chance. Elavenil Valarivan and Apurvi Chandela failed to qualify in the next round of Women’s 10m Air Rifle.
In archery, Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav lost to Korea in the mixed team quarter-finals. They had earlier won against Chinese Taipei.
Shuttler Sai Praneeth crashed out in the first round in badminton.
Paddlers Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal lost to Chinese Taipei in the first round. In individual matches, Manika Batra and Suthirtha Mukherjee advanced to the second round.
In hockey, the men’s team won 3-2 against New Zealand in its opener in Tokyo Olympics. Harmanpreet scored two goals through penalty corner, while Rupinder scored one through the shootout. The women’s team however lost 1-5 to the Netherlands.
