Emission Scandal: Volkswagen to recall 1,950 cars in China

Volkswagen ScandalBeijing, Oct 12: Volkswagen will recall 1,950 diesel vehicles in China affected by its emission cheating scandal, China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said in a statement on Monday.

The company is working on developing a remedy for customers and will submit solutions to Chinese authorities soon, Xinhua cited AQSIQ statement as saying. Volkswagen should recall the vehicles as soon as possible and keep authorities updated to protect Chinese customers’ interests, the statement said.

On September 18, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a notice of violation (NOA) of the Clean Air Act to Volkswagen, accusing the company of installing software that deceived emission control tests in about half million diesel cars sold in the US since 2008. The software, which the EPA called a “defeat device”, only runs the full emission controls when the car is being tested. During normal driving, however, the car will emit nitrogen oxide of up to 40 times the standard.
