With India’s captain cool announcing his retirement from international cricket, an era has come to an end. Statistically, he is India’s most successful captain winning all ICC tournaments.

Known for his ‘cool image’ on field, he certainly gets wittier too. We collated some of the cheekiest conversations of the skipper recorded on the stump microphones.

Ian Bell Episode

It was India vs England Test. Pragyan Ojha was bowling when Dhoni said to him, “Iski Ghanti Baja De.” How ‘Punny!’

Sreesanth Gets a Girlfriend Taunt

Looks like, S Sreesanth wasn’t paying enough attention to Dhoni’s fielding positions. There came a quick taunt from the captain, “Oy Sree! Udhar Girlfriend nahin hai, idhar aaja thoda!”

‘Beach’ For Rayadu

In the World Cup clash against Ireland, Ambati Rayadu perhaps was not up to the mark as a fielder. And Dhoni comes up with, “Rayadu jag zara…volleyball ki tarah khada hua hai beach pe.”

Pujara’s Clap Show

While giving instructions to Ravindra Jadeja, Dhoni reasoned out why Chesteswar Pujara was placed on slip. In his iconic style he said, “Ye ghoomega to Pujara ko isi liye idhar rakha hai, wo udhar taali bajane ke liye nahin hai.”

No Time To Waste Robin

Girlfriend se raat main baat karlena, pehle ball phenk de,” Robin Uthappa got a piece of Dhoni’s mind when he delayed throwing the ball.

If you are already missing on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s trademark helicopter shot in the delayed IPL 2020, worry not, there is some good news in waiting! Meet seven-year old Pari Sharma, the ‘Baby Dhoni’ christened by the social media for accurately imitating Dhoni’s iconic helicopter shot.

Pari’s video surfaced online when former cricketer Aakash Chopra tweeted her video and said “Thursday Thunderbolt…our very own Pari Sharma. Isn’t she super talented?”

The video has since garnered over 89,700 views and tweeted by other cricket personalities too. “I see now helicopter shot being actually practiced. Along with collecting the ball very close to the stumps as keeper, this is another cricketing technique Dhoni has popularised as great options for budding cricketers,” tweeted commentator Sanjay Manjrekar.

The Child Prodigy

Pari Sharma resides in Haryana’s Rohtak and her father, who has played with former Indian cricketers including Joginder Sharma, is her coach.

This is not the first time she has left the social media spellbound with her cricketing techniques.

Earlier this year, a leading cricket website tweeted her video praising her talent, footwork and shots. Former English players Naseer Hussain and Michael Vaughan had shared the tweet.

Pari aspires to be a cricketer and represent the Indian national team.

Five hockey players including captain Manpreet Singh have tested positive for COVID-19. The four other players – Surender Kumar, Jaskaran Singh, Varun Kumar and goalkeeper KB Pathak, were made to undergo mandatory COVID-19 tests after they joined the national camp in Bengaluru.

“Five hockey players, including captain Manpreet Singh, who joined the National Camp in Bengaluru after a home break and were travelling together, have tested Covid positive during SAI’s mandatory test. They are in isolation, and under treatment. I wish them a quick recovery,” Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted.

As per reports, the players were given the RT-PCR test after Manpreet and Surender started to show symptoms. All the five players had tested negative in the rapid test.

“I am doing fine and hope to recover very soon. I am happy that they made the testing of athletes mandatory. That proactive step helped in identifying the problem right in time,”

Manpreet was quoted by a news agency.

The training of other hockey players is unlikely to get affected. The camp is expected to resume on August 20, after the players complete their quarantine period.

The new program for boys will strengthen the talent pathway and bridge the gap between
grassroot players and an elite HPC and by providing more opportunities to young and promising hockey players from the state and country.

“The HPC has ambitious program to take hockey skills from its existing 10 grassroots centres and three regional Development Centres (Bhubaneswar, Panposh & Sundergarh) to elite level over the next three to five years. The boys program will have 30 Resident cadets from U -17,”

said Sports Minister, Odisha Tusharkanti Behera.

“We are seeing positive results among the girls who are being trained and are confident that the HPC will be able to provide similar highly focused and professional training to the boys too. They all are young, skilful and have a natural flair for hockey. We will evaluate the players individually at the HPC and match their skills with appropriate training at the world-class facilities here in Bhubaneswar. Training early at a synthetic turf vis-a-vis on grass pitch grounds will benefit these players immensely.”
