7.9 Earthquake hits Nepal, Tremors in India

Earthquake in nepalMassive tremors have been felt in North India after a huge 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Nepal. People came of their residences following the tremors and a panic situation was there in many parts as the tremors lasted between 30 seconds and couple of minutes.

The main epicentre of the 7.9 earthquake was in Nepal. It is reported that building in some areas were damaged.

At 11.50 am, earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi, NCR region, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal and Odisha. Some areas in Bihar state along the Nepal border were affected in the earthquake. After shocks have been felt in Delhi and other parts of India, and people were seen in panic following earthquake. Epicenter was 83 kilometres North West of Kathmandu, Nepal, measured 7.9 on Richter scale.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the depth of earthquake was 10 km and measured 6 on the Richter scale in India. The US Geological Survey said the epicentre was at Lamjung in Nepal – a district some 75 km northwest of capital Kathmandu and measured 7.9 on Richter scale.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “News has come in about an Earthquake in Nepal. Several parts of India also experienced tremors.” Prime Minister Modi called his counterpart in Nepal Sushil Koirala and discussed about the situation there.

At least one person was killed when an old building collapsed in the premises of the Indian consulate in Kathmandu when a massive earthquake shook the country.
