Indian Diplomat Devyani Khobragade, whose arrest and strip-search had caused a massive national outrage last year, has been stripped off her duties as the Director in the Partnership Development division in External Affairs Ministry. She was put under ‘compulsory watch’.
Devyani was penalised for making statements to NDTV and other TV channels about her arrest and strip search in the United States without the permission of the MEA. The government is also upset at Devyani for not disclosing that her children have US passports. She is facing a vigilance probe over this issue.
Devyani Khobragade is a 1999 Indian Foreign Service officer. She was arrested and strip-searched in New York in December 2013 on charges of ill-treating her domestic help of Indian origin. The issue threatened to sour the diplomatic relations between two countries. Khobragade was later allowed to return to India.
