Dr. Kalam (1931-2015) buried in Rameswaram with Full State Honours

Modi-salutes-KalamPrime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in bidding a tearful adieu to ‘People’s President’ Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, who was buried at his ancestral village in Rameswaram with full state honours. Thousands of people gathered at the burial place to pay homage to the departed soul, who died at the age of 83 in Shillong on 27 July.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted Dr Kalam’s mortal remains, which was wrapped in the Indian Tricolour. The PM then walked around Dr Kalam’s body hands folded. After saluting the body of Dr. Kalam, Modi walked up the 99-year-old brother of the former President and touched his feet – a rare gesture by a Prime Minister.

The tri-services guards paid their respect to Dr. Kalam before the burial. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, many Chief Ministers, Union Ministers and dignitaries were also present at the burial site. People chanted slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Abdul Kalam Amar Rahe” during the process.
