West Bengal Nun Gangrape: 1st Arrest made in Mumbai

Bengal nun gang-rapeThe West Bengal CID has arrested Md. Salim Sheikh from Mumbai in connection with recent gangrape of a nun in a convent school in Nadia District of the state. This is the first arrest in connection with the incident though police detained several persons for interrogations.

The accused Shaikh alias Salim was nabbed following a specific tip off and his similarity with CCTV footage of the incident and sketch of persons involved in the crime released by the CID. He was arrested from his friend’s residence in Nagpada in South Mumbai last night and brought to Kolkata for further investigation.

A bunch of dacoits had robbed the convent school in Ranaghat in Nadia district of Bengal in the wee hours of March 14, and in the process they had allegedly gangraped 71-year-old nun. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and protest.

The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee handed over the probe to CBI after growing protests from different quarters.

Meanwhile, the Nun recently left the state for unknown destination after the treatment at a government hospital at Ranaghat in Nadia District.
