The ban on the broadcast of a documentary based on the December 16, 2012 gang rape in Delhi, including an interview with one of the rapists, has left members of the film fraternity shocked and appalled. They called the ban shameful.
The documentary “India’s Daughter” by British filmmaker Leslee Udwin has kicked up a storm over the interview of one of the six men who raped the 23-year-old trainee physiotherapist on December 16, 2012 in a moving bus in Delhi. She later died in a Singapore hospital where she had been airlifted for specialised treatment.
The central government on Thursday served a legal notice to the BBC in connection with the documentary, which was also uploaded on video sharing website YouTube by an individual and received reactions from all quarters.
While talking to IANS, filmmaker Kunal Kohli said “It’s important to see the rapist hang rather than watch a documentary” and Hansal Mehta said that its difficult for him to comprehend the government’s order and questions why the government is restricting cinema from reflecting the truth of society.
Some celebrities took to micro-blogging site Twitter to share their thoughts about the ban:
