Real Life Tragedy: Top Celebrities who committed Suicide

As the figures in National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveal, on an average 15 people commit suicide in an hour in India. Maharashtra stands second in the suicide index, while Tamil Nadu comes first in it. Although, mental depression is the main cause in the cases of suicides, the shocking deaths of celebrities take everyone by surprise. Literally, it acts as a complete bolt from the blue, when millions of fans of the celebrity hear the sad news of death of their favorite actress or model. Failure in personal relationship, financial tragedy, and slow growth in career are some of the causes of suicidal deaths of celebrities. Besides these causes, drug abuse or alcoholism by the young celebrities also create impulsive ideas about self-killing in their minds.

The infamous suicide cases of celebrities, which have shocked teeming millions in India, are as follows:

Divya-BhartiDivya Bharti – The actress with her immaculate doll-like looks, who won the hearts of millions of fans by her excellent acting skill in the nineties, died from a fall from the balcony of her apartment on 5th April, 1993.

Though officially not confirmed that whether her death was a suicide or murder, her life as an actress and unexpected death continues to sadden people, who liked almost every movie in which she had acted.


Silk-SmithaSilk Smitha – Vijayalakshmi, familiar in the Tamil and Hindi cinema as Silk Smitha, was the most favorite erotic actress in the adult movies. In a career of 17 years, she acted in 450 movies in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu languages.

The seductive starlet also appeared in some of the landmark movies of her time that stand etched in the minds of her admirers till now. The versatile vamp in the movies was found dead in her Chennai apartment on 23rd September, 1996.


Nafisa-JosephNafisa Joseph – Groomed as a model from the early age of 12, Nafisa Joseph was the youngest contestant in the Miss India contest that she won in the year 1997. Till today, Nafisa remains an inspiration for the young aspirants, vying for a career in modeling.

On 29th July, 2004, the twenty-five year old model hanged herself over an issue with her fiancée businessman Gautam Khanduja. Her death created quite a stir in the world of modeling was she was a brilliant model of her time.


Jiah-KhanJiah Khan – The British-American actress, Jiah Khan, literally swept the entire world of Hindi cinema off its feet with her first on-screen appearance in the movie Nishabd in the year 2007. The movie directed by Ram Gopal Verma had the mega-star Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role.

She committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling-fan in her room on 3rd June, 2013. Her reported break-up from her boyfriend Suraj Pancholi was quoted as the reason of her suicide.



Viveka-BabajeeViveka Babajee – As the ad for Kama Sutra condom rocked the world of advertisement, it created a new successful model- Viveka Babajee. Her work as an anchor in FTV and role in the movie Yeh Kaisi Mohabbatt Hai were equally impressive.

The model was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her apartment in Bandra of Mumbai on 25th June, 2015. The reason cited behind her death is believed to be excess depression from her separation from her boyfriend, Gautam Vora.


PratyushaPratyusha Banerjee – She was one of the prettiest faces among the newcomers in the world of entertainment in television. Best remembered for her portrayal in the role of Anandi as a young woman in the highly popular television serial Balika Vadhu and later as a participant in Bigg Boss and Jhalak Dikhla Ja won her high acclaim from her admirers. The 24-old young actress committed suicide 1st of April 2016 because she suffered from acute depression due to some alleged problems with her boyfriend.
