Dissemination Workshop of Research Study on Women in PrisonsThe State Commission for Women conducted a sharing workshop on research work done on the topic of Women in Prison. In a function held on Wednesday at Hotel Kalinga Ashok, Hon’ble Minister of Women & Child Development Smt Usha Devi highlighted the needs of the women in prisons and the need for their rehabilitation. In the keynote address the Chairperson of the Commission Smt Lopamudra Baxipatra elaborated the study objectives and some of the key findings regarding the legal aid and assistance that the women in prison need.

She said that there a high number of women under trials in the prisons. She also highlighted that there is a need for various administrative departments to work in cohesion with Prisons for the holistic development of women inmates and also their release, IG Prisoners Sri Pradeep Kapur congratulated the State Commission for Women & SRCW on the research study and observed that this will go long way in looking into the welfare the women inmates.

Commissioner cum Secretary Women & Child Development Sri Saswat Mishra in his address stated that department will take many of the recommendations. There was a presentation of the study findings by Dr Amrita Patel, Project Advisor, and State Resource Centre for Women. The members of the State Commission for Women, representatives from the departments, Legal Service Authorities, Civil Society organizations, lawyers, advocates, and law students were present on the occasion. The study report has been uploaded in the website of the Commission.
