IMS-Bhubaneswar organises seminar on Human Rights and Political Legitimacy

IMS-BhubaneswarBhubaneswar, Dec 11: Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings irrespective of nationality, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. All are equally entitled to the human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, guaranteed by law, in the forms of international law and general principles.

The human rights law lays down obligations of Governments to act in certain ways or to refrain from certain acts,in order to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of individuals of groups, said State Coordinator of National Institute of Human Rights Education, Odisha, Pradipta Nayak here on Thursday.

Addressing a seminar on ‘Human Rights and Political Legitimacy’ on the occasion ofHuman Rights Day organised by Institute of Media Studies (IMS), Nayak stressed on the importance of education in promotion and protection of human rights. Eminent Social Worker and Human Rights Defender Akhand said due to low awareness on the laws among the citizens, human rights violation cases have been increasing in the State.

He cited some of the human rights violation cases like man-made flood, Police Torture, Infant deaths, Custodial Death in police stations and rights violation of tribes etc. Speaking on the occasion, Journalist and Columnist Om Prakash said in a democratic country, rights and obligations are correlated and supplementary each other. Though protests and demands are being intensified for executing rights, on one is showing concern for their fundamental duties and obligations.

Among others, director of IMS Prof Upendra Padhi, faculties Dr Gayatri Patnaik, Raghunath Mandal, Shitendra Baliarsingh, Snigdhajyotsnamayee and Manoranjan Panda were present.
