IMS- Bhubaneswar organises seminar on ‘Mass Media’

IMS-BhubaneswarBhubaneswar, Sep 26: The Information Technology and Internet are now shaping the world. Social media is playing a great role for development of the society. It played major role in the protests that happened at Anna Hazare’s movement and several other such movements gained a lot of public attention particularly among youths. The malpractices and misdeeds including corruption by the government and private players are busted by media.

At the same time, media require self-regulation to contribute social development in better way, said Resident Editor of Kanak News Manoranjan Mishra on Saturday. He was speaking at the seminar on ‘Mass Media and Social Development’ organized by city-based Institute of Media Studies (IMS) at its conference hall on Saturday.

Mishra expressed his concern about the growing commercialization in every sphere. The long breaks in prime time shows with commercial advertisements are quite an errant, moreover the promotion of films and even television soaps on news channels have become the trend these days that are presented as ‘news’.

This is in some way needs to be controlled, he said. Speaking on the occasion, former VC of Utkal University Prof LN Mishra said students of journalism and mass communication should be trained well and they should have nose for news in order to be success in the sector. Students need to follow the path of eminent media personalities in
development journalism field and get inspiration, he suggested.

Attending the seminar, eminent documentary filmmaker and communication consultant explained on the role of development communication and media’s self-regulation. He encouraged the students to pursue journalism through impartial and balanced reporting and by doing thorough background research. “The role of media has been indispensable and would continue to be the one in a democracy like ours when carried out with a sense of responsibility in the building of the nation,” he added.

Communication Expert and Blogger Bimal Prasad stressed on the proper use of communication and social media tools for social development. The scope of the media has been increased into broader perspective and internet platform has brought people closer to the mainstream media. Among others, director of IMS Prof. Upendra Padhi, faculties and students of the institution were present.
