Odisha Chapter of IIISLA observers Road Safety Week

Bhubaneswar, Jaroad-safetyn 11: Odisha Chapter of the Indian Institute of Insurance Surveyors & Loss Assessors (IIISLA) observed Road Safety Week here on Sunday. Commissionerate of Police officials participated on the occasion. Besides, officials of the institute and other dignitary persons attended.

Road safety week is a time to remember and honor road accident victims who are killed or maimed every day – and this safety program is conducted with all seriousness and enthusiasm every year, in many cities in India, including Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

The large increase of human & motorized traffic on the state highways of Odisha, has made traveling in the state not only enjoyable, but has also woefully seen a rise in the accompanying risk of road fatalities.

IIISLA are professional engineers, who are licensed by the Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India (IRDAI) to inspect vehicles involved in accidents and asses the loss to them. An insurance Surveyor & Loss Assessor is among the first person, after the police & local rescue teams to reach a spot of occurrence of accident. A Motor Insurance Surveyor is a responsible automobile / mechanical engineer who inspects the vehicle and notes the extent of damages caused to a motorized vehicle.

The following road safety measures are suggested by IIISLA for safety of the citizens:

#. Every Bicycle rider, school going or others, must have a Reflective / Luminous Tape on the back of their bicycles, so they can be seen from a distance, even on dark road, and a probable collision from back can be avoided.

#.  Every bicycle rider must be made aware about the importance of wearing light colored clothes while riding on dark roads.

#. Young parents driving the cars must ensure that their children below six years are in booster seats, since their bones may be injured in case they use adult seat belts on them.

#. Citizens, especially children must be taught to walk on roads not having pedestrian walk ways. They should walk on the right side of the road so they can see the oncoming vehicles – and if adults are along with the children / pets, they must ensure that the children & pets must be held to their right hand side to avoid oncoming traffic grazing past them.

#. Highways should have “Cats Eyes” and Glow Tapes installed on blind curves.

#. Commercial vehicle drivers must have knowledge of giving emergency aid – and this may be ensured while renewing driving license.

#. Private Car drivers must be taught that Safety Belt must be worn at all times – otherwise “Air Bags” will not get activated.

The above are but only a few example of safety measures suggested by IIISLA – we can certainly work in tandem with various stake holders involved in “Road Safety Programs” – and make a positive contribution.

The Commissionerate of Police, Bhubaneswar & the Odisha Police and Government of Odisha are working overtime, working excellently with all humane zeal to ensure that your loved ones are safe on roads & otherwise. Let us voluntarily join hands with them in their noble (& at times very un-envious task) of maintaining ROAD SAFETY…A huge HURRAY for them!
