INS Kalvari Submarine commissioned into Navy today

Insight Bureau:  INS Kalvari, first ‘Made-in-India’ Scorpene class submarine commissioned into Navy by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

Reportedly as many as six Scorpene-submarines are being built by Mazagon Dock Limited, India’s prime shipyard as a part of Project-75 of the Indian Navy. The remaining five boats will be delivered by the yard by 2020.

During the flagging off ceremony, PM Modi said that the entire ecosystem related to defence and security has started to change in the last three years. He said the skill-set accumulated during the manufacture of INS Kalvari is an asset for India.

Modi described the submarine as an excellent illustration of the fast growing strategic partnership between India and France and INS Kalvari will add even more strength to the Indian Navy.
