Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel passed away in the wee hours of Wednesday morning due to multiple organ failure at a hospital in Gurugram. He was 71.
The Congress veteran had earlier tested positive for COVID-19 infection. His son Faisal Patel confirmed the news of his death through a tweet.
Senior leaders of the Congress and politicians cutting across party lines paid tribute to the leader.
“It is a sad day. Shri Ahmed Patel was a pillar of the Congress party. He lived and breathed Congress and stood with the party through its most difficult times. He was a tremendous asset. We will miss him. My love and condolences to Faisal, Mumtaz & the family,” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also offered his condolences and spoke to his son.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also offered his tribute.
