Former J&K LG Shri Girish Chandra Murmu Becomes First From Odisha To Be Appointed CAG

New Delhi: Hours after he resigned as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, GC Murmu was appointed as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India. He is the first person from Odisha to hold the position. The President of India Ram Nath Kovind issued the notification of his appointment late on Thursday night.

Murmu will replace Rajiv Mehrishi, a 1978-batch IAS officer from Rajasthan cadre, whose tenure ends on Friday. Former Union Minister Manoj Sinha will take over as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

A 1985-batch IAS officer from Gujarat cadre, Murmu was born in Betnoti village in Mayubhanj district in Odisha. After completing his schooling in Mayurbhanj, he pursued Master of Arts in Political Science from Utkal University. He also has an MBA degree.

Murmu is said to be close to both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He was the Principal Secretary to Narendra Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. He was also the former Expenditure Secretary. In 2013, he was questioned by the CBI in the alleged Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik congratulated the appointment of Murmu through a tweet.

“Congratulate #Odisha born IAS officer Girish Chandra Murmu being appointed as Comptroller and Auditor General of India. Wish him best for his new responsibility.”
