NATIONAL CONSTITUTION DAY – A day of celebration for every Indian!

This 26 November we observed the Constitution Day also known as Samvidhan Divas to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India.

On this day in the year 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution of India. However, the Constitution of India came into effect on 26th January 1950. Hence, we celebrate 26th January as Republic Day every year.

National Constitution Day was declared on 11th October 2015 by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. He declared this day while laying the foundation stone of Dr B. R. Ambedkar’s Statue of Equality memorial in Mumbai. It was implemented to raise the awareness of people on the Indian Constitution and its significance. On this day, various events are organised in schools, colleges and offices to make people familiar with their Constitution.

Since the year 2015 was the 125th birth anniversary of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, the Government of India decided to celebrate this year in a grand way. Dr Ambedkar was the chairman of the drafting committee of the Constituent Assembly. He played a very significant role in the drafting of the Indian Constitution. Therefore, Dr B.R. Ambedkar is known as the Father of the Indian Constitution.

The need to write and incorporate the constitution of our own was felt after India got independence from the British rule in August 1947. Everything seemed disorganised and out of control back then and there was a dire need to make it all systematic. A drafting committee was set up that worked under the chairmanship of Dr B. R. Ambedkar. The constitution of India was drafted after considering the country’s socio-economic conditions and various other aspects. The Indian constitution gave our country a direction and a sense of responsibility to our leaders. National Constitution Day is a mark of respect to the constitution.

National Constitution Day is a day of pride for every Indian!
