India celebrates Janmashtami with great splendour

janmashtamiThe birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, better known as Janmashtami or Gokulashtami is celebrated with great splendour across the country.

The festival is celebrated on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of vadrab month.

Various temples across the country have also been decorated with colourful lights and flowers to mark the occasion. Devotees celebrated the festival by participating in ‘dahi handis’, the joyful and mischiveous nature of Krishna.

The main celebrations are taking place in Mathura and Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh, and Dwarka in Gujarat.
