Karnataka Policeman’s killers sent to 14 days Police Custody

Karnataka PoliceBengaluru, Oct 23: A court on Thursday sent the duo who stabbed Karnataka Police sub-inspector S. Jagadish to death to 14 days police custody for interrogation.

Harish (42) and Madhu (20) were arrested on Monday at Nagpur and flown to city on Wednesday night.

“As courts were closed for Dasara festival, we produced the accused for remand at the house of Judicial Magistrate First Class Prakash at Nelamangala (where the crime took place),” Bengaluru Rural Superintendent of Police Ramesh Bhanot told reporters.

The accused killed Jagadish at Nelamangala, about 30 km from here, on october 16 after a hot pursuit, when the latter slipped and fell in a road side ditch.

The duo fled from the crime spot on a motorbike and escaped to Hyderabad via Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh and boarded an express train to New Delhi on October 19.

On learning that the accused were in an unreserved coach of the AP Express, the Maharashtra Police was alerted with their photos, which made it easier to identify and trap them at the Nagpur railway station when the train halted.

High drama prevailed around the magistrate’s residence, as hundreds of people thronged the area when the accused were brought from Bengaluru amid high security, demanding police hand over the duo to them for avenging Jagadish’s murder.

Though Jagadish was posted at Doddaballapur police station, 36 km north of Bengaluru, he went to Nelamangala to track down the duo on a tip-off that they were about to steal motorbikes there.

The state government gave a cheque of Rs.50 lakh ex-gratia-cum-group insurance to Jagadish’s widow Ramya on Wednesday, as he died while on duty.
