Lalit Modi was booked under FEMA without Arrest Provision: Jaitley

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley rejected all allegations made by the Congress and gave a point by point rebuttal to the charges. Jaitley made solid defence to prove that the UPA Government did not build a strong case against Lalit Modi. “Forget about Deportation, there was even no provision to arrest Lalit Modi under FEMA”, he said.

Here’s Jaitley’s Defence in Lok Sabha:

* Only FEMA case was lodged against Lalit Modi when he went out of India.
* Only a Light Blue Corner case notice was issued against him, which is aimed at getting the info on a whereabouts of a person at the Airports.
* He was not a fugitive or absconder as per the law.
* There was no strong case against him. The FEMA charges, which do not have provisions of arrest, were not enough to seek his deportation. Hence, Chidambaram’s plea was rejected by the UK.
* As the case was not strong, his passport was revoked by the court.
* All these happened during the UPA Regime.
* We initiated further probe against Lalit Modi and now building a strong case under money laundering so that he can be prosecuted.
