A Bronze that brings Cheers and Tears of Joy to India

Sakshi-Malik-BronzeWhile many over-hyped and known sportspersons faltered at Rio 2016, which made India remain medal-less till Day 12, the unsung warrior Sakshi Malik made us proud by opening the account for the country with a Bronze medal. And, it came on the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan – a gift for her countrymen, who were desperately waiting for a podium finish by an Indian at Rio Olympics.

People in India glued to their TV sets till 3 AM to witness Sakshi Malik’s Bronze medal bout. When she was trailing 0-5, there was a near heartbreak. But, Sakshi did not give up. She knew she carried the expectations and aspirations of 1.25 billion people. She produced tremendous grit and determination to equalize and then show power play in the last 30 seconds to win the game 8-5.

Although it was a mere Bronze medal, it was equal to 100 Gold medals won by other countries. There were celebrations across the country, which started at 3:30 AM and still continues. Many were in tears to see India finally register its name in the medal table. Those who had already slept, woke up to this pleasant surprise. Yes, Sakshi showed the way. It’s the victory of women power in India, which would guide and motivate many other girls to bring laurels to the country in future.
