Allahabad now officially renamed Prayagraj

ONI Bureau:  Despite strong backlash from opposition leaders, the Cabinet of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday cleared the proposal to rename the historic city Allahabad ahead of Kumbh Mela.

Allahabad was officially renamed as ‘Prayagraj’, got its own old identity today after 433 years.

Sources said Mughal emperor Akbar had named Pryag as Illahabas in 1575. It later became called as Allahabad. Before Akbar’s reign, Allahabad was known as Prayag.

The city’s original name – Prayag or “place of offerings” comes from its position at the Sangam (confluence) of the Ganga, Yamuna and Sarasvati rivers (Triveni Sangam).
