ONI Bureau: Breaking News! The Odisha Police arrested Abhijit Iyer-Mitra who courted controversy by posting humorous and satirical tweets against Odia culture and monuments as well as MLAs and Journalists in the state. He was arrested under Section 295-A for hurting religious sentiments. During his Odisha visit, he spoke against the Muslim community during the sightseeing of Konark temple.
According to reports, Abhjit was detained at Nizamuddin Police Station first, questioned and then got arrested. He will be produced in Saket Court after a medical check-up. The Odisha Police may seek his transit remand, it’s believed.
Abhijit’s friend Aarti Tikoo Singh, who had accompanied Abhijit during his Odisha visit, had tweeted in his support soon after his arrest.
So Odisha Police has arrested my friend @Iyervval for his satirical humor because it “hurt religious sentiments”. This is the other side of Indian democracy where religious sentiment supersedes and prevails over all other fundamental rights. We remain stuck in Middle Ages. Shame.
