BJD MPs opposed Centre’s aid to Polavaram Project

Polavaram ProjectBhubaneswar, Mar 15: Opposing financial aid from the central government to the controversial Polavaram project, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MPs created uproar in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. The MPs have opposed the irrigation project which is being built on Godavari River in neighboring state Andhra Pradesh.

The MPs interrupted the finance minister’s statement over the project in the upper house. Finance Minister Arun Jailtey in a reply said that the project would get assistance from the central government through Nabard. But, he could not complete his speed following the protest and uproar by BJD MPs.

They demanded the central government to roll back its decision over the funding to the controversial project. The parliamentarians pointed out that two months back the Union Water Resources Minister had agreed to hold tripartite discussion among central government and governments of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh to resolve the issues regarding the project. They questioned the central government’s move for assistance without holding the tripartite discussion on the project.
