Carrying Body of Daughter killed by Cyclone Titli, Man walks for 8 km

ONI Bureau: The ‘Dana Majhi’ episode of Kalahandi has been revisited today when a man was forced to carry his daughter’s dead body and walk for around 8 km to reach the hospital to conduct post-mortem as he was told that without an autopsy, he won’t be eligible to get the Rs 10 lakh compensation announced by CM Naveen Patnaik.

The eight-year-old daughter of Mukund Dora, had gone missing since October 11 in Odisha’s Gajapati district. Her body was found near a nullah yesterday. There was no effort by the administration to shift the body to hospital for post-mortem. When Mukund was told that he won’t get any compensation without post-mortem, he carried the body to the hospital in Kainpur.

As the village was inaccessible, he had to walk for 6 km before he was spotted by the media people, who alerted the district administration and police who later arranged an autorickshaw to carry the body to Kainpur Hospital and then Paralakhemundi for post-mortem.

While the father claimed that cops who visited him yesterday, could not help much, the police officials cited inaccessible roads for the delay in shifting the body for post-mortem. The incident has triggered a massive outrage across Odisha with Opposition leaders slamming the State Government on this issue, saying the latter has turned insensitive and indifferent towards people’s problems and yet to learn lessons from Dana Majhi episode.

The District Administration has later announced the compensation of Rs 10 lakh to Mukund Dora.
