How CBI cracks MMS Scandal in Bhubaneswar

Subrata SahuIn a major breakthrough, CBI has arrested Subrata Sahu alias Kalia of Bhubaneshwar, who was part of a group that filmed themselves gang-raping two women and then posted the videos on various forums, including WhatsApp.

The videos were shot in 2010,  circulated through MMS and then through WhatsApp at a later stage. Subrata, who has a construction company, based in VSS Nagar in Bhubaneswar, was arrested by the CBI on Monday. Later, the investigating agency took him on a three-day transit remand.

Activist Sunitha Krishnan, who launched a campaign last month called “Shame The Rapist” to identify the men and have them punished after she was alerted to the heinous videos, has hailed the CBI and Supreme Court for nailing the main accused. Ms Krishnan, who is based in Hyderabad, is a rape survivor and runs an NGO.

Late in February 2015, the Supreme Court acted suo moto or of its own accord after Sunitha raised this issue, and ordered the CBI to investigate the case while observing that video.

The apex court had even directed Odisha’s Chief Secretary to be present in the court on April 10 for failure of the State in responding to the notice issued, and a fine subsequently imposed, in connection with the case.
